KARACHI: Former Test cricketer Mohammad Ilyas has temporarily replaced Mohsin Khan as Pakistan’s chief selector, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Wednesday.
“As Mr Mohsin Hassan Khan will be travelling to UAE as coach for Pakistan team, the management has decided that, in his absence, Mr Ilyas will be the Chairman Selection Committee. Mr Ilyas will resume his duties with immediate effect,” said a brief statement issued by the PCB.
The media release came a couple of days after the Board appointed Mohsin as Pakistan’s interim coach for the series against Sri Lanka starting in UAE from October 18.
Ilyas, who played 10 Tests for Pakistan between 1964-69, has quite a controversial background. In June this year, he was suspended as national selector by the PCB for breaching its code of conduct.
Ilyas, a paid selector, was penalised for criticising former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi and taking part in a television talk show with the banned Salman Butt.
Last May, Afridi had slammed Ilyas saying that as selector he (Ilyas) always insisted on including his son-in-law Imran Farhat in the national team. Ilyas responded by making derogatory remarks against Afridi.
At that time, the Board also served him a show-cause notice after the 65-year-old Ilyas sat with Salman Butt in a TV programme. Butt was banned for ten years last February after being found guilty of spot-fixing. Under ICC guidelines, no board member can liaise with a banned cricketer.
